Chicago Aikikai is moving

March 5, 2025 By Dwight

In January, Chicago Aikikai learned its lease would not be renewed. We must vacate by June 2026.

Change has been part of the dojo since it began informally in 1961 in a Lakeview basement on Clark Street, then moved across the street the following year as Illinois Aikido Club. It has since relocated to Uptown (Bryn Mawr, 15 years), Rogers Park (Howard Street, 4 years – as Chicago Aikikai), Northcenter (Lincoln Avenue, 15 years), and presently West Town (Chicago Avenue, currently 16 years).

A new dojo presents challenges. Competition for space in Chicago is high, as are prices for construction and materials. And like many dojo, we are still rebuilding membership since the COVID-19 pandemic.

THE KEVIN CHOATE SENSEI MEMORIAL BUILDING FUND

However, we are ready to meet that challenge, and to that end, we are launching the Kevin Choate Sensei Memorial Building Fund. Choate Sensei was Chief Instructor of Chicago Aikikai from 1981 until his passing in 2012, and is strongly credited with creating the dojo’s distinctive interior design. It seems only fitting we honor his legacy in this campaign.

You may donate by check made out to “Illinois Aikido Club dba Chicago Aikikai” and mailed to the dojo at 1444 W Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60642, or click here to donate online. Chicago Aikikai is a 501(c)3 not for profit and all donations are tax deductible.

Thank you.

Kagami Biraki 2025 at Chicago Aikikai

January 18, 2025 By Dwight

Chicago Aikikai officially rang in the new year with its kagami biraki and potluck held as part of its regular Third Friday class. Training was kicked off by Chief Instructor and Dojo-cho Marsha Turner Sensei, and followed by rotating instruction by dan-ranked members. Class was followed by a sankyu test for Joe Guerrier and potluck, including the traditional breaking open of the kagami mochi rice cake and a cask of sake. Thank you to everyone who came, especially our guests from Lake County!
