MEMBERSHIP

Those interested in learning more about Aikido are welcome to drop in at the dojo to observe a class at any time. We also invite you to participate in First Sundays Free - a complimentary Introduction to Aikido class that we offer from 1-2pm on the first Sunday of every month.

Our Members - Chicago Aikikai has over a hundred dojo members at varying levels. Our Aikido classes are small - about 10 students per class - allowing for individualized instruction. Our dojo represents a wide variety of racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds, as well as different religions, lifestyles, and age groups. As a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we do not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation.

Top Quality Instruction - Founded in 1961, Chicago Aikikai was the first Aikido school (dojo) in the Midwest, and it is among the oldest in the United States. It is home to the highest-ranked and most experienced Aikido instructors in Chicago. Our Chief Instructor, Kevin Choate Sensei, began his Aikido training in 1976 and holds the rank of Aikido sixth dan (sixth-degree black belt). Joe Takehara Sensei, one of the dojo's first students, is also sixth dan. Yuki Hara Sensei, fifth dan, and Marsha Turner Sensei, fourth dan, are among the highest-ranked women in Aikido in the Midwest.

Unlimited Classes - When you join Chicago Aikikai, your monthly membership dues permit allow you to take an unlimited number of classes during the month, including iaido. There are no contracts at this dojo.
